What are Superfoods?

What are Superfoods?

Superfoods.  We often talk about them but do we really know what they are and how we can add them into our diets?  We have teamed up with our friends at Groovita, the specialists in Superfoods, to find out what it is and how it can benefit you.

WHAT ARE SUPERFOODS?

Right across the globe, people are beginning to recognise the health-giving benefits of superfoods such as Acai Berries, Noni fruit and Goji berries which are high on the superfoods list.

A superfood is simply explained as a food that offers a high nutritional value for the amount of calories it contains. Superfoods are often very high sources of vitamins, minerals, omega oils, protein, iron and amino acids.

With hundreds of foods listed as the top 10 superfoods, superfoods for weight loss, superfoods for skin, superfoods for men and everyday superfoods it’s hard to distinguish which is best for your health.

We provide numerous superfood recipes which make it easy to integrate our Groovita superfoods into your everyday diet, without having to invest in expensive tools and tricks for consumption. For example, we have a number of simple recipes for a superfood smoothie. Green superfoods such as chlorella and spirulina are very popular on detox diets and cleansing smoothies due to their reported ability to alkalise the body and reduce acidity, balancing PH levels.

Groovita deliver a selection of 10 pre-portioned superfoods to your door on a weekly or fortnightly basis so you don’t have to invest in expensive larger packets which can quite often get neglected and lurk in the back of our cupboards.

Everybody enjoys variety in life, so each box will have a new mix of superfoods for you to experiment and benefit from. We have an initial 10 superfoods that we will be working from (please note that there will be 5 varieties in each box)

The first 5 superfoods that you could find in your first box could be:

Organic Acai Berry Powder

Acai berries are considered one of the top superfood sources, due to their high antioxidant properties, along with being a great source of vitamins and minerals. Most often found in powder form, Acai has a wonderful flavour that tastes great when added to smoothies, juices or even on its own dissolved in water.

Goji Berries

Goji Berries have been a popular ingredient in Tibetan medicine for centuries with annual celebrations to honour this popular superfood. Rumour has it that Goji berries have been attributed to the long lives of people within a region of the Himalayas with reports of no grey hair and no loss of teeth!

Packed with trace minerals, protein, healthy fats, antioxidants and many other nutrients, Goji Berries can give you more energy and a healthy boost of vitamins, minerals and essential amino acids.

Organic Turmeric Powder

Turmeric has commonly been found in Indian Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for many centuries due to what was believed to be superior health promoting qualities.

Many of us will recognise the name as a spice, widely used in curry dishes and Asian food but this centuries old spice has been linked to the healing of many health complaints such as arthritis, heartburn, joint pain, stomach pain, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

Due to its anti-inflammatory properties originating from curcumin, Turmeric has even been claimed to heal skin complaints such as ringworm, sprains and swelling, bruising and sores.

Organic Chlorella Powder

Chlorella is blue-green algae that has amazing health benefits such as detoxifying the body. It is one of the richest foods in beta carotene, protein and the nucleic acids (DNA & RNA) and contains more chlorophyll than any other food.

Chlorella is beneficial for improved digestion, for giving a boost to your immune system and replenishing you from the inside out with clear, smooth skin.

Raw Organic Maca Powder

Maca powder has been used for thousands of years in Peru, traditionally used by Inca warriors before entering battle! Regarded as one of the most powerful superfoods, Maca hypocotyl root contains over 55 beneficial phyto-chemicals!

Widely used to boost libido, increase stamina, fight fatigue and help you find your inner zen, Maca root is loaded with B vitamins, thiamin, riboflavin, calcium and iron which boost energy levels.

Maca is tough as its powerful vitamins and minerals are concentrated in the root, below the surface making it able to survive high altitudes and colder temperatures.
